Here is a step by step guide right from the time of selection till return from the Holy pilgrimage developed and designed by Dr. Shakir Hussain, Chief Executive Officer, Haj Committee of India, Mumbai. For download, click here.

Haj is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. It is obligatory on every adult, sane Muslim, having sufficient means for undertaking the journey, to perform Haj once in life time. Almighty Allah says in holy Quran:

And Haj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Kaa’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence).” (Al-Imran: 96-97)

The messenger of Allah (SAW) has emphasized its importance in a Hadith reported by Muslim

“Oh Men! The Haj has been made obligatory (fard) on you. So keep this commandment” (Muslim).

On Whom Haj is Obligatory
For the incumbency of Haj some pre-requisite conditions have been deliberated in the books of Ahadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) which can be summed up that the intending pilgrim must be: -
1.    An Adult Muslim
2.    Sane and good in health
3.    having sufficient money earned through lawful means, for the expenses of the journey.
4.    There should be enough provisions left for the support of the family during his absence.
5.    Journey should be safe and there should be no problem in reaching Makkah.
In addition to these, for a woman there is one more legal obligation that she must perform the pilgrimage in the company of her husband or a Mahram (with whom under no circumstances it is lawful for her to marry) e.g Father, Son, Brother, Maternal Uncle, Uncle, Nephew, Grandson, Son-in-Law, grandfather, maternal grandfather etc. In the similar vein, a woman should refrain from Haj during Iddat (The term of probation incumbent upon a woman in consequence of dissolution of marriage either by divorce or the death of her husband).
Preparation for Haj
On confirmation of selection, make it a habit to inculcate among yourself humility, fear of Allah, and modesty and introspect the past sins, mistakes, shortcomings and repentance for these. Aspire for the acceptance of Haj by Allah in your favour and removal of obstacles in its realization in your benedictions. Besides upholding the obligatory prayers on time, offer supplementary (Nawafil) prayers especially Tahajjud (Night Prayer) with consistency. In addition to these remove mutual grievances and clear off your debts. Appoint somebody from your group as head (Amir) and obey his orders during the journey. Before departure and after arrival don’t organize gluttonous feasts.
On the day of Departure
After performing Salat al Layl, i.e. Tahajjud seek Allah’s mercy with humility, remorse and tranquility for making the pilgrimage of Haj easy and acceptable.
 Before the time of Departure
After ablution or bath (Ghusul) offer two Rak’ahs of Naful and start the journey for Haj. It is essential here to note that these two Rak’ahs have no relation with Haj or Umrah but it is in essence of Prophet’s (SAW) practice that he always initiated a journey by offering two Rak’ahs in the Masjid.
Abstaining from Innovation (Bid’ah)
1.   While departing, men should refrain from shaking hands with Ghayr—Mahram women and women with Ghayr-Mahram men.
2.   Garlanding the Pilgrims at the time of departure should be avoided as it does not fall in line with the Islamic Principles.
3.   With honor, grace, humility and benevolence in medium tone read out Kalima-i-Tawheed and say Durood-i-Ibrahim while departing. Uncecessary sloganeering must be shunned. One must also prevent one’s friends and acquaintances from raising Takbeer in mixed voices of men and women.
During whole journey discipline, fraternity, Self-Sacrifice and humility must be displayed and maintained.

At Haj House
Two days before their departure, the pilgrims are provided travel documents like passport with duly endorsed Visa, boarding pass, blank immigration form and identity card.

1.  On the day of departure, on reaching Haj House, the volunteers shall take your luggage to check-in counter.
2.  After identifying your luggage, with all travel documents in hand, stand in queue for check-in. Obtain luggage tag.
3.  Collect foreign exchange (Riyals) from the specified counter.
4.  Accommodation Stickers will be pasted on your Passports by the State Haj Committee staff.
5.  Make ablutions, and proceed to the departure lounge. You can offer Salah but don’t make intention for Umrah at this stage. If it is time for obligatory prayer (Salah) offer it in congregation in the departure lounge itself.
6.  After some time you will leave for airport under proper escort.

At the Airport / while on board.
7. On reaching the airport you will be taken straight to the waiting hall. Wait for announcement for putting on Ahram in case the flight is to Jeddah. Wear normal clothes in case the flight is destined to Madinah. Offer two Rak’ahs prayer (Salah). Proceed for Immigration to the designated counter in a queue. Sign the documents with the same signature as appearing in the Passport and check the Passport for Immigration Stamp. Proceed for the Customs check. After Customs clearance move to the Security Hold area. You can use toilets, perform ablution till the time the boarding announcement is made. Proceed to the aeroplane in a queue and take your allotted seat. While on board, make less use of toilets. Don’t spill water on the flight floor as it may cause accident. During journey recite Quranic Verses, benedictions (Durood) and carry on supplications continuously. While on board, Salah can be offered at its prescribed times while being seated in one’s respective place. When the plane reaches near Miqat an announcement will be made; make intention for Umrah.
During the journey Talbiyyah should be recited continuously. Upon arrival at Jeddah airport passport and vaccination card should be kept in hand so that the process of identification becomes easy. Make ablutations at the airport and (whichever Salah is requisite) offer Qasr in congregation. Refreshments are available at the airport. Recitation of Talbiyyah must continue unabated.
On reaching Jeddah, the pilgrims are vaccinated for Polio in the holding area. Then proceed for Immigration clearance. The Passports shall be endorsed with seal and signature and returned to you. After Immigration collect the baggage and proceed towards Customs counter for clearance. After coming out of the Customs hall, the travel documents shall be checked by Maktabul Wukala staff. The staff of the Indian Consulate, Jeddah shall assist the pilgrims towards the buses arranged by the Moalim for traveling to Makkah Mukarrammah. While boarding the buses please ensure that your baggage has been loaded in the same bus. The buses will proceed towards Makkah Mukarrammah. The pilgrims are taken to Moalim’s office where certain formalities are completed and then taken to their respective buildings. After getting refreshed, proceed for Umrah.
 The essential (Arkan) of Umrah
1.    Wearing Ihram from Miqat and making Niyyah.
2.    Circumambulations (Tawaf) of Kaabah.
3.    Walking to and fro (S’aie) between the hillocks of Safa and Marwah.
Tawaf (Circumambulation of Kaabah)
Circumambulating around Kaabah seven times constitutes a Tawaf. With the kissing, touching or gesticulating in the direction of Hajr-i-Aswad initiate the circumambulation from your Westward side. In this Tawaf(-i-Qadoom) the male pilgrims should do Iztiba (wrap down Ahram underneath the right arm so that the right shoulder remains bare) during all seven circumambulation and Ramal (walk quickly in small steps with the fists closed and chest broadened) in the first three rounds.
After completion of Tawaf kiss, touch or gestculate towards the Hajr-e-Aswad and walk towards the Maqam-I-Ibrahim which is located some paces from the Kaabah kept in a glass box with a golden cover. If it’s not possible to ofer Naful near Maqam-i-Ibrahim, these can be offered at any place within Masjid-e-Haram. After prayers seek blessings with humble invocations and then move towards the Maa-u-Zam Zam (Water of Zam Zam) containers, which have been set up in all directions of the sacred precincts. Drink it to your full and also rub it on your body. While drinking this water recite dua.
After quenching thirst with Maa-u-Zam Zam, crossing the courtyard of Sacred Kaabah, kiss Hajr-i-Aswad or just gesticulate with your hands, move towards the hill of Safa (which is today just a rock adjacent to Masjid-i-Haram). Perform seven rounds of S’aie starting from Safa so that the S’aie concludes at Marwah.
For S’aie men should walk quickly in between Maileen-e-Akhzareen (marked with green lights)
During Sa’ee there is no specific Dua. The Duas based on Quran and Ahadith must be chanted, if one does not remember any Dua then Sa’ee done in silence is also valid. The seventh i.e. last up and down will complete near Marwah, come out of the gateway and resort to Halaq or Qasr ie. either shave off your whole head or clip of the hair of your whole head. Women should also get a small bit of their hair clipped either by another woman or husband or by a Muharram. It is better that women should clip their hairafter reaching the hotel room. Al Hamudullilah your Umrah is complete.
During your stay make it a habit to do as much Tawaf as possible. These Tawaf should be done in your normal dress (without Ihram) and neither Iztiba nor Ramal or S’aie should be performed.
Whenever circumstances permit offer two Rak’ahs of Salah and seek mercy inside the adjoining free space of Kaabah (Hateem). Also seek invocations at Multazim as and when it is possible. It must be taken note of that after offering two Rak’ahs supplementary at Hateem or invocating at Multazim one must immediately move out from there so that the other Muslim brothers can also have a chance and your reward is escalated. In the sacred jurisdiction after obligatory prayers, offer the Sunnat-i-Salah with a halt as in most cases after obligatory prayers funeral prayers are offered.

Preparation for Haj
On 8th Dhil HIjjah you are supposed to leave for Haj. So be ready beforehand; create in you the qualities of meekness, humility and modesty. Before leaving for Haj keep in mind the principles and obligations which make it possible. Understand that abandoning any principle (Rukun) will not complete the Haj and abdication of an essential (Wajib) will lead to DUM( penalty) becoming necessary.
Principles (Arkan) of Haj
1.    Adorning Ihram (on 8th Dhil Hijjah)
2.    Stationing at Arafat (on 9th Dhil Hijjah)
3.    Circumambulating Kaabah i.e. Tawaf-i-Ziyarah (on 10th, 11th or 12th of Dhil Hijjah).
Essential (Wajibat) of Haj
1.    Adorning Ihram from Miqat (i.e. hotel rooms).
2.    Waqoof-i-Arafat till dusk.
3.    Spending a night at Muzdalifah (between 9th and 10th Dhil Hijjah)
4.    Rami Jamrat i.e stoning the Satan in systematic manner.
5.    Shaving or Clipping hair of head.
6.    Sa’ee between Safa and Marwah.
7.    Animal Sacrifice (Qurbani)
8.    Farewell Circumambulation (Tawaf-i-Vida)
Ihram for Haj
With the dawn of 8th Dhil Hijjah pilgrims have to leave for Haj. Before leaving make ablutions in your hotel bathrooms and adorn Ihram. Offer two Rak’ahs in our own rooms and make intention for Haj. Women too should adorn new or washed clothes after taking bath or making ablutions, then making the intention for Haj. Two rakkat of Salah and the intention for Haj can be performed in Masjid-i-Haram also. The Talbiyah should be recited continuously while proceeding towards Mina.
Stay at Mina
Mina is located at a distance of 8 kms from Makkah where thousands of comfortable fire proof tents are established for Haj. Plenty of bathrooms, toilets are also available.  After offering the Zuhr, Asar, Magrib and Isha prayers on 8th Dhil Hijjah and spending a whole night there and on 9th Dhil Hijjah offer your Fajr either in a grand mosque Masjid-i-Khaief or in congregation in your own tents.
Journey towards Arafat
On 9th Dhil Hijaj after sunrise proceed to Arafat either by buses or on foot reciting the Talbiyyah continuously. On reaching Arafat (which is about 9 kms from Mina) make ablution and offer Zuhr and Asar together and in shortened form (Qasr and Jama’a in accordance with the practice of Prophet) either at Masjid-i-Namirah or in your tents with congregation.
The Stay at Arafat
Waqoof-i-Arafat is the main feature of Haj pilgrimage. Make it sure that you remain within the boundaries of Arafat. It must be acknowledged that a part of Masjid-i-Namirah remains outside the boundary of Arafat. The stay at Arafat is the most valuable moments in the life of a true believer and shouldn’t be wasted in conversation or hairsplitting on the issue like offering Qasr or not in any other work but with live and desire to adhere to Phophet’s way and in accordance with it spend your time in seeking blessings with humility from Allah. Whatever supplications you remember, recited with moist eyes while standing or sitting. According to prophet’s saying nobody will leave empty handed from here but one should only have etiquette of how to invoke blessings. If possible go towards the Mountain of Blessings (Jabl al Rahmah) where the Prophet’s (SAW) stayed during his farewell pilgrimage and with humility pray and supplicate.
Departure from Arafat
Till dusk during your stay at Arafat ask for blessings. With the sunset without offering Maghrib tread towards Muzdalifah on foot or in buses with Talbiyah on your lips. Muzdalifah is a huge ground about 3 Kms in the eastern side between Mina and Arafat. One should return from Arafat to Muzdalifah with respect and dignity reciting Talbiyyah, Zikr and prayer as much as possible.
If due to some extreme situation it becomes impossible to reach Arafat before sunset on 9th of Dhil Hijjah, such a person can reach Arafat upto Fajr time of 10th Dhul Hijjah and his Wuqufi Arafat will be fulfilled.

Stay at Muzdalifah
At whatever time you reach Muzdalifah resort to Qasr and Jamah-Bayn al-Salatayb (i.e. with one Azan and two Iqamats) offer Maghrib and Isha in congregation at Masjid Mas’hr-al-Haram or within the jurisdiction of Muzdalifah where ever space is available. Seek blessing after Salah. Send Durood on the Prophet (SAW). After completion collect seventy (or more) pea sized pebbles in small packets. Pebbles can be collected and taken along from Mina also. It should be keenly kept in mind that this night is unique in the life of any true believer, so spend it in seeking divine blessings with humility and meekness. While offering Durood and remembering the Creator take notice of Prophetic way. Do rest after it because our Prophet (SAW) on his farewell pilgrimage took rest also for a while during night.
After ablutions offer Fajr prayers with fellow pilgrims in congregation. After completing Salah supplicate with moist eyes preferably in standing position till the sun rises. With the sun rise start journey from Muzdalifah to Mina which is about 7 kms distance. On reaching Mina go to your tents to have some rest and keep your baggage there.  Proceed to Jamrat for Rami at Jamrah-i-Uqaba. Throw seven pebbles one by one at Jamrah. After completion of stoning go for sacrifice (Qurbani). If you have deposited the sacrificial amount in the bank while at Makkah, remain satisfied that the sacrifice (Qurbani) has been done on your behalf in your name. If somebody wishes to perform sacrifice personally, he can go to slaughter house located in Mina. After performing sacrifice, shave off the hair or clip it short. Women should also clip a fingertip equivalent of their hair. With this act, one becomes free from restrictions of Ahram and can change over to the normal clothes.
Tawaf-i-Ziyarat
The pilgrims leave for Makkah for performing Tawaf-i-Ziyarat together with S’aie. If due to some reason, Tawaf-i-Ziyarat could not be possible on 10th Dhil Hijjah, it should be completed in next two days.
Return to Mina
After Tawaf-i-Ziyarah, the pilgrims have to return back to Mina and spend the days of Tashreek in Mina. During the stay in Mina keep yourself preoccupied with Zikr and offer salah at prescribed times in congregation. On 11th Dhil Hijjah after Zawal proceed to Jamrah for stoning. On this day all the three Jamrah: Jamrah Uula, Jamrah Wusta and Jamrah Uqba are to be stonned in this order by throwing seven pebbles one by one towards each. The time of stoning remains till sunset. After Rami come back to your tent. Similarly on 12th Dhil Hijjah after Zawal, go for Rami in the similar manner at all the three Jamrah.
Your Haj is now complete Al Hamudullilah, but with one condition that you have to leave the jurisdiction of Mina before sunset of 12th Dhil Hijjaj. If somebody can not make it because of some reason, he will have to spend the night in tents of Mina and repeat the Rami on 13th Dhil Hijjaj in the same manner as done on 11th and 12th Dhil HIjjah. This Rami can be done before noon too.
As per guidelines of Saudi Government, it has been decided that during Haj 2013 only 50% of pilgrims will be allowed to leave Mina on 12th of Dhil HIjjah and 50% Pilgrims will have to stay in Mina till 13th Dhil Hijjah.
Return of Makkah and Farewell Circumambulation (Tawaf-i-Vida)
The Pilgrims return to Makkah and wait for their return home. It is Waajib for the Pilgrims staying outside the Meeqat to perform farewell Tawaaf before laving Makkah Mukarramah. The farewell Tawaaf is offered just before leaving Makkah Mukarrammah. It is the last Waajib of the Haj. Just after Tawaf-e-Ziyarat begins the time of performing Tawaf-e-Vida. Ramal is not required while performing Tawaaf-e-Vida. This Tawaf can be performed in normal clothes without Ramal and Iztiba. After performing Tawaaf-e-Vida, proceed to the place of Zam Zam and drink Zam Zam, as much as possible. If possible touch the door-step of Holy Kaa’bah, proceed to Multazim and offer prayers with tearful eyes, cry with your heart and soul and seek the mercy, forgiveness and blessings of Allah Almighty.
This is last Tawaaf you are performing during this journey. Make full use of it by seeking the forgiveness, mercy and blessings of Allah Almighty, pray for good health, prosperity, safety and security and all other relevant prayers in favour of yourself and of your family, friends, locality, country and entire Muslim Ummah.
Journey to Madinah Munawwarrah
Madinah Munawwarah is the second most pious city of Islam. It is the city of our beloved Prophet Mohammad (SAW) it is located about 450 Kms to the north of Makkah Mukarramah. The Holy Prophet (SAW) migrated from Makkah Mukarramah to Madinah Munawarrah. The migration marks the beginning of Islamic Calendar (Hijri), which means Migration.  The Holy Prophet (SAW) spread the teaching of Islam from this city.
Moalim will arrange to send the Pilgrims to Madinah Munawwarah as per the set programme. As you reach Madinah Munawwarah, first go to your place of residence. Keep your belongings there. Take some rest, if time permits. It is better to take bath or at least perform ablution before entering the Holy Mosque. One should wear new and clean clothes, apply perfume and enter the Holy Mosque (Haram Sharief) with extreme politeness and humility to do ziyarat of Holy Mausoleum and pay respect and express love and humbleness to Prophet Mohammad (SAW), the seal of the Prophets (Khatam-un-Nabiyeen). The love and respect for the Messenger of Allah (SAW) in fact, is the pre-requisite of Imaan, as such, on must feel the natural urge to visit the second most Holiest of the places, after Holy Kaa’bah. If it is a prayer time of any Farz Salaah, then you should first offer Farz prayers in the congregation. After Farz prayers, visit Roza-e-Aqdas. Please be informed that there are different timings earmarked for men and women for visiting Roza-e-Aqdas and Riyaz-ul-Jinna’h. It is desirable to pray forty obligatory prayers at Masjid-e-Nabvi. One can also visit different places of religious and historical importance in Madinah Munawarrah.

Khutba-tul-Vida (The Last Sermon of Prophet (SAW)
Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) delivered his last sermon (Khutbah) on the ninth of Dhul Hijjah (12th and last month of the Islamic year), 10 years after Hijrah (migration from Makkah to Madinah) in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat. His words were quite clear and concise and were directed to the entire humanity.
After praising, and thanking Allah the Prophet (SAW) said:

“O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and TAKE THESE WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that HE will indeed reckon your deeds. ALLAH has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. Allah has Judged that there shall be no interest and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn ‘Abd’al Muttalib (Prophet’s uncle) shall henceforth be waived…
Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.
O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah’s trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.
O People, listen to me in earnest, worship ALLAH, say your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to.
All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety (taqwa) and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.
Remember, one day you will appear before ALLAH and answer your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, NO PROPHET OR APOSTLE WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QURAN and my example, the SUNNAH and if you follow these you will never go astray.
All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O ALLAH, that I have conveyed your message to your people”.
